If you know me, you know that I am not one to hold back on what I think when it comes to taking care of your skin (or anything else for that matter). I just like to tell it how it is and take care of my people! And you are my people.

When new eyeliner clients call in to schedule an appointment, many of them are using some sort of eyelash serum and we have to tell them to stop taking it immediately. (Cue the ugly crying.) We know, we know. They make your eyelashes look super glam!! But they also do terrible things for your eyelids. If you want to read more about how destructive eyelash serums can be, read my blog post, Why Eyelash Serums Are So Damaging, here.

All clients must stop using eyelash serums for 6 weeks to ensure their color holds and they don’t bruise to the point we have to stop mid-procedure. Yes, unfortunately, this has happened on multiple occasions.

Once you understand what these destructive eyelash serums are doing to the delicate eye area, you will want to know how to recover from them. Here are 3 easy ways to recover from destructive eyelash serums, approved by Vicki Hansen herself!… myself? Let’s not get technical on that one.

Use FACTORFIVE Eye and Lash Cream Daily

FACTORFIVE’s eye and lash cream is a 3-in-1 powerhouse that combines human derived stem cell derived growth factors, with biotin and redensyl, to help replenish the eye area while safely enhancing your lashes and brows. This cream saves you valuable time on your skincare routine and is safe for everyday use! Growth factors help replenish a more youthful-looking eye area, where biotin and redensyl work together to quickly and safely enhance your lashes and brows. Let’s talk about the two main ingredients in FACTORFIVE’s eye and lash cream. We’re just going to focus on the hair growth aspect, although it offers a plethora of other benefits!

Biotin – Biotin is a well-known ingredient in many hair growth products (and for good reason!). Currently, it is one of the best supplements for boosting your eyelash growth because Vitamin H (biotin) greatly works to thicken and strengthen hair as well as stimulate hair growth. Who doesn’t love thicker, longer, stronger lashes?!

Redensyl – Redensyl is one of the newest breakthroughs against hair loss. It is the first hair care cosmetic active ingredient based on regenerative medicine researches. Redensyl is a natural alternative that is clinically proven to work by encouraging the division of hair stem cells, leading to hair growth and has not reported any negative side effects or interactions. There are, however, common side effects from using many other eyelash serums. Those side effects include burning or irritation of the eye, itching, redness or irritation at the treated area, as well as unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body. Think random eyelash growth outside of the eyelash line. YIKES! Thank goodness that FACTORFIVE’s eye and lash cream was made with the purpose of applying it to your entire eye area! Get rid of crow’s feet while growing your eyelashes and growing eye brow hair!

FACTORFIVE’s eye and lash cream is prostaglandin free and will not change the color of your eyes like many other eyelash serums can do. It is formulated with humanity in mind—without parabens, mineral oil, sulfate detergents, phthalates, urea, DEA, or TEA, and is not tested on animals. We love finding leaping bunny approved products that actually work! You will start to see visible results within four weeks of use.

Exfoliate with OCuSOFT Eyelid Scrub (Original) Daily

These bad boys are easily accessible and affordable! Just head to your local Walgreens to find a 30-day supply of OCuSOFT’s original eyelid scrub for under $20! If you don’t want to leave your house, you can buy directly from their website at a lower cost ($13.95 versus $16.99 at Walgreens).

These pre-moistened pads lightly exfoliate to effectively remove oil, debris, pollen, and bacteria that accumulate at the root of your eyelashes. This reduces irritation, inflammation, and ultimately reduces eyelash loss. All you do is open the individually packaged pad, wrap it around your finger, close your eye, and gently cleanse your eyelid using a side-to-side motion.

OCuSOFT offers a variety of eyelid scrubs, but I have found that the Original formula is my favorite and shows the best results for what I look for. Also, OCuSOFT lid scrub is FSA and HSA approved! So it might be covered by your insurance.

Stop Using Eyelash Serums Immediately

The best thing you can do for the delicate eye area is to stop use immediately with your current harmful eyelash serum. We need weigh the risk versus reward. Yes, beautiful eyelashes are what every woman wants and will do almost anything to attain! But surely we value the health of our eyes and eyesight over using something that is potentially harmful just to have long lashes! My first reaction when someone tells me about a new product that is working miracles for them is to look at the ingredients. I want to know what they’re putting in that product to ensure the safety of my clients.

When it comes to eyelash serums, yes, they work wonders for eyelash growth! But most of them use growth hormones (there is a different between growth hormones and stem cells), namely prostaglandin. When lash serums became all the rage, I did extensive research on them. The wide usage of growth hormones in these serums, which are largely untested for use on the delicate eye area for prolonged periods of time, was extremely alarming. I have had clients come in on both ends of the spectrum from using lash serums. I have had some clients whose eyelid skin was paper thin and couldn’t handle the procedure. I also had some clients whose eyelid skin was tough as leather and wouldn’t hold the color. Both of these scenarios happened often and we had to tell them to stop using their serum and come back in 8 weeks. Upon their return, the procedures went much more smoothly!

Side note: Although Latisse is approved by the FDA and requires a doctor’s prescription, I still would not recommend it to my clients.
